About Call to Conscience
Call to Conscience is a celebration of Black History with innovative themes that seeks to reconnect all people with the contributions of African Americans to this country and the rich history of African American culture along with the story of its evolution. Call to Conscience acknowledges African American leadership of the past and recognizes the paths that were blazed by these fallen heroes. As such, through our guest speakers and performances we also recognize, acknowledge and showcase those new and emerging leaders who may be controversial, but have the courage and wisdom to blaze paths of their own.
Through our guest speakers and panels we further examine conditions that disproportionately affect people of color. The Black History Month Celebration highlights that fact that African American history is American history. The two are intrinsically intermingled. The Black History Month Celebration builds community by working with various local organizations who share our dedication to the enhancement and growth of our communities. The Black History Month committee works in concert with these organizations to offer activities and resources to help encourage students and their family members to explore the history of African Americans, to learn about their struggles, to celebrate their successes, and to understand issues impacting African American and all communities.
Our Elders of Distinction Ceremony creates an opportunity to honor those who are living and who have blazed paths in the State of Washington . By connecting the past with the future we seek to provide a bridge of history and pride that connects youth of all kinds with the rich history of African American contributions to Washington State History.
