Call to Conscience for Innovation Leadership : February 2006

A Celebration of Black History, will bring together renowned individuals who exemplify innovation and leadership for keynote addresses. The evening will include a film presentation, which highlights memorable moments in the life of Coretta Scott King and chronicles her legacy. There will be another presentation on film that pays respect to African-American history makers who have passed in the last year like Rosa Parks, Richard Pryor, Johnny Cochran, Luther Vandross and more.

The Rialto Theatre will be the host site. The event will begin at 6:00 pm with reception, appetizers and a silent auction.

2006 Call to Conscience Keynote Speakers:

Reverend Dr. Lewis E. Logan II - Senior Pastor Bethel AME Church Los Angeles, CA
Provocative and controversial are words used to describe Dr. Logan, one of the nations leading civil rights activists, as well as a leader of the Community Call to Action and Accountability. Dr. Logan is also the Commissioner for the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners for the City of Los Angeles.

Music legend Kashif, from his teenage years as a member of the '70's seminal funk band B.T. Express, through his award-winning albums as a solo artist and his hit-making productions with such major artists as Whitney Houston, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Kenny G., Evelyn "Champagne" King, Melba Moore, Me'lisa Morgan, and Dionne Warwick, has always been an innovator, and multi-talented individual, whose cutting edge approach has placed him in the upper echelons of contemporary R&B, Pop, and Jazz music.

 

Bill North Major League baseball player,
World Series and base stealing champ
Former Garfield High School student/athlete Bill North played 11 major league seasons with the A's, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, appearing in three World Series and collecting two title rings with Oakland. He was a base-stealer extraordinaire, collecting 395 in his career, and twice leading the American League--with a big league-best 75 thefts in 1976 and 54 in 1974. He had two other seasons of 53 or more. In addition to stealing bases, North also utilized his speed in the field to lead American League outfielders three times in total chances per game, twice in putouts, and once each in assists and double plays. On July 28th, 1974, he accomplished an unassisted double play against the Chicago White Sox.



Colonel Kathy D. King Chief of Perioperative Nursing Services at Madigan Army Medical Center.
Colonel Kathy D. King is one of only two African American women in the United States Military to attain the status of Chief of Perioperative Nursing Services at a major medical center. Colonel King has proudly served her country for 21 years including a stint at the 31st Combat Support Hospital in Saudi Arabia during operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Colonel King has been the recipient of numerous awards including membership in the exclusive Order of Military Medical Merit and recipient of four meritorious service medals.


The evening's festivities proceed at 7:15 pm 10:00 pm with an array of speakers who exemplify Innovation and Leadership. The evening’s performances will include dance, spoken word and an array of arts that demonstrate African American contribution. The 2006 Celebration of Black History will again be a Call to Conscience. This yea's Call to Conscience is to “Innovation and Leadership with a special tribute to Coretta Scott King in film, words, and featuring Betty Slater in a moving performance that chronicles the life of the wife of Dr. King who was a leader in her own right.

WHY: In the spirit of Black visionaries and innovators who have contributed so much to American history, Call to Conscious: A Celebration of Black history seeks to reconnect all people with the contributions of African Americans to this country and the rich history of African American culture along with the story of its evolution. Call to Conscious acknowledges leadership of the past and recognizes the paths that were blazed by these fallen heroes. As such, through our guest speakers and performances we also recognize, acknowledge and showcase those new and emerging leaders who may be controversial, but have the courage and wisdom to blaze paths of their own.

Adefua African Music & Dance Company
Adefua African Music & Dance Company is a performing ensemble known for its high level of energy and commitment to African music and dance. Adefua’s music and dance performance evokes a magical atmosphere with music, clothing, dancing and singing. The group performs and also presents workshops in the traditions of Africa’s distinct ethnic cultures including, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Zaire, Guinea and the Caribbean.

This innovative group of young Tap artists combines the craft of legends like Sammy Davis Jr. and Gregory Hines with the contemporary contribution of Savion Glover to create a magical Tap performance that has thrilled audiences all over the United States

The 2006 Black History Month Celebration includes a drive to have civic and community leaders along with supportive and concerned citizens sign a Petition to "Live the Legacy" which will be sent to the King family thanking them for their contributions as a family to Black history and civil rights.
The evening will of course be highlighted by Keynote Addresses from our provocative guest speakers whose diverse background and opinion will speak to the conscious of Innovation and Leadership. These speakers have on a national level shown through their work and/or vision both leadership and innovation.
